11106NAT – Course in Epilepsy Management

This nationally recognised course provides essential first aid training for the recognition, treatment, and management of epilepsy and seizures. Delivered in partnership with Epilepsy Action Australia—the leading national provider of epilepsy services—this course ensures high-quality, expert-led instruction through a third-party delivery arrangement.

Students enrol and receive expert training from subject matter specialists at Epilepsy Action Australia (a non-RTO), on behalf of Red Cross First Aid & Mental Health (RTO ID 3605). Red Cross ensures that all training and assessment meets national training package requirements, and Statements of Attainment are issued by Red Cross upon successful completion.

This course is ideal for professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge and confidence in epilepsy management, including teachers and education support staff, general practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, and those working in aged care and disability support.

Prerequisite:  To enrol in this course, student must provide evidence of having successfully completed one of the following units of competency.  Evidence must be in the form of a current and valid certificate:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Target Audience:

This course is primarily for health and community support workers, childcare, schools, and the aged care sector. It is relevant for anyone wanting a more in-depth knowledge about epilepsy management or supporting an individual living with epilepsy.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students who successfully complete this course receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment (issued by Red Cross First Aid & Mental Health RTO 3605).

Learning Methods:

Choose from one of three online and self-paced course options. Participants are required to complete courses within a 12-month timeframe:

Option 1: Online (approx. 50 hours), 1 Core 2 Elective Units:
  • Core unit: Support individuals with epilepsy (NAT11106001)
  • Elective unit: Respond to seizures in adults with intellectual disabilities (NAT11106003)
  • Elective unit: Administer emergency medications for seizures (NAT11106002)
  • Includes a 3-day work placement and practical assessments completed via video conference or self-recorded video submissions

Option 2: Online (approx. 40 hours), 1 Core 1 Elective Unit:
  • Core unit: Support individuals with epilepsy (NAT11106001)
  • Elective unit: Respond to seizures in adults with intellectual disabilities (NAT11106003)         
  • Includes a 3-day work placement and practical assessments completed via video conference or self-recorded video submissions

  • Core unit: Support individuals with epilepsy (NAT11106001)
  • Elective unit: Administer emergency medications for seizures (NAT11106002)
  • Includes online assessments and practical assessments demonstrating first aid for seizures and administration of emergency medications completed via videoconference or self-recorded video submission.
